Hurricane Season Pool Prep Checklist for South Florida Pool Owners
Complete pre-storm, during-storm, and post-storm checklist for Boca Raton, Coral Springs, Parkland, Delray Beach
Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30 in South Florida. A well-prepared pool can ride out even a major storm with minimal damage — but an unprepared one becomes a green, debris-filled disaster that costs thousands to recover. This is exactly what to do before, during, and after the storm.
Emanuel Pools is fully insured and CPO Certified, serving Boca Raton, Coral Springs, Parkland, Delray Beach, Deerfield Beach and nearby areas.
48 Hours Before the Storm
Test and balance your water chemistry first: pH 7.4, chlorine 3–5 ppm, alkalinity 80–120 ppm. Add an extra dose of chlorine to compensate for the dilution heavy rainfall will cause. Clean your skimmer and pump baskets so they have full capacity for incoming debris. Top off the pool water level — full pools resist debris contamination far better than half-empty ones. Finally, trim nearby tree branches that could break loose in high winds.
24 Hours Before: Protect & Cover
Run the pump cycle the day before to clear excess debris. Turn off all electrical breakers to pool equipment 12 hours before landfall — do NOT drain the pool. A full pool with covered equipment has the best chance of surviving wind and flooding. Remove and store loose items like toys, floats, skimmer baskets, and patio furniture that could become projectiles. If you have a screen enclosure, follow your manufacturer's storm protocol; many recommend cutting screens to relieve pressure.
During the Storm
Stay indoors and away from the pool — lightning is a real threat. Don't try to skim, vacuum, or adjust equipment during the storm. Resist the temptation to drain water from the pool to reduce overflow; standing water actually weighs the pool shell down and prevents it from floating up out of the ground in heavy flooding. If you've already lost power, your pump should be off (you already flipped the breaker), so the water will sit calmly until the storm passes.
After the Storm: Cleanup Sequence
Wait until the storm has fully passed and conditions are safe before approaching the pool. Skim out large debris by hand first — starting the pump with branches and leaves in the basket will burn out the motor. Once the surface is clear, shock the pool with chlorine to oxidize organic contamination from rainwater and debris. Restore power to the equipment and run the pump for at least 24 hours straight on full filtration. Test water chemistry, rebalance, and add algaecide if conditions warrant. Most pools recover within 3–5 days of consistent treatment.
When to Call a Pro
Call a CPO-certified pool service if the pump won't restart, if you see equipment damage from debris impact, if the water turned green and stays green after 48 hours of treatment, or if you suspect electrical damage — do NOT touch equipment that may be wet or compromised. After a major hurricane, even experienced pool owners often need professional help to fully restore water chemistry and clear contamination. Emanuel Pools offers post-storm priority service across South Florida.
Document Damage for Insurance
If your pool sustains visible storm damage, photograph everything before cleanup begins. Capture wide shots of the deck and equipment pad, then close-ups of cracked pumps, bent panels, missing tiles, broken cages, or debris in the basin. Note the date and time. Most homeowner policies in Florida cover storm damage to pool equipment, but claims require clear before-and-after evidence. Save receipts for any emergency cleanup or repair services — these are typically reimbursable.
Get a Post-Storm Inspection
Emanuel Pools offers a flat $95 diagnostic visit in the local service area. That visit includes a CPO Certified inspection of the pump, filter, and circulation system, plus a clear written estimate before any work.
